Stone County Hometown Health Planning Coalition will assist Stone County
to be a resourceful, creative and empowered community enhancing the quality
of life for all its residents through collaboration, coordination and cooperation.
- Remember 1994 when things concerning health and safety in Stone County
started happening? That was a momentous year. Concerned residents of Stone
County began coming together monthly to talk about and act on health and
safety issues important to Stone County. School based health fairs were
the first step in a long history of preventative health activities in Mountain
View, Timbo, and Rural Special Schools coordinated by what is now known
as the Stone County Hometown Health Planning Coalition.
- The Coalition recognized the importance of surveying youth health risks
in 1995, using the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, created by the Center For
Disease Control and Prevention. They repeated the survey in 2001 and were
able to see health trends and risk behaviors impacted by at least one of
the Coalition intervention areas targeted by the Be A Winner Program. This
valuable information was made available to each individual school in order
for them to write for state and federal grant money based on the most current
health, safety, and risk behavior data.
- In the past, the Stone County Hometown Health Planning Coalition has been
instrumental in making communities aware of health, safety issues, immunizations,
and alcohol/tobacco and drug issues through their annual Family Health
Fair event. This year's event will be held at the County Fair Grounds November
1st. Thousands of dollars worth in Free health screenings, literature and
giveaways will be available to the public.
- Since 1994 the Coalition has grown and evolved to include many partners.
If you are interested in becoming involved with the Coalition or just one
